Suicidal behaviors and their association with social support and depression symptoms

The past 40 years, mortality from suicide in young people has increased steadily in Mexico. Isolation is a behavior that often occurs in young people with symptoms of depression, which is the most common disorder in people who have presented suicidal behaviors. Therefore, the objective of the study was to know the prevalence of depressive symptomatology, to know the levels of social support, and to know if there is an association between suicide, depression and social support in university students from health area licenses in a sample of 119 students from a public University, who responded the PHQ-9 (Diez-Quevedo, Rangil, Sánchez-Planell, Kroenke, & Spitzer, 2001) and Social Support scales. As a result, it was found that there were higher levels of depression in students belonging to the community of sexual diversity. No association was found between sex and depression, although the average of the men resulted in a higher score, compared to the women. Regarding social support, the homosexual population presented lower levels; and in women, the index is higher compared to men. In population without previous suicide attempts, participants presented greater social support and lower depression rate. The association between suicide, depression and social support; suggests an inversely proportional correlation, greater social support, decreases the depression variable, as well as the suicide attempts variable.
