Abstract

The objective of the present study was to develop and psychometrically evaluate a scale measuring the problematic use of cell phones in adults. 301 adults participated (71.1% women and 28.9% men) with an average age of 25.9 years old. A Likert type scale was designed with 19 items, to evaluate problematic use of cell phones; also, four closed questions were used to measure the pattern of use. The instrument was applied digitally, the invitation to participate in the study was made through social media. Results from the exploratory factor analysis showed that the items were grouped into four factors: interference with activities, preoccupation, interpersonal problems, and attachment to a cell phone. Adequate reliability indexes were obtained, both for the instrument total and for dimension. Significant differences were found in all the dimensions due to the time of cell phone usage, where the ones who reported less use presented fewer problems. It can be concluded that there is an adequate tool for the adult population of Mexico.
