The following article presents the caracteristics of the Roman pilum, his shape and use as the basic weapon for the beginning of the battle. There are exposed different theories about its origin, both historiographic and arqueological, concluding that the application of such a weapon, more than an appropiation or an invention, responses to a policy of legitimation used by the Romans to increase their territory.
